Barrie's professional foundation is accountancy. He qualified as a Chartered Accountant and developed a career that included taxation, business advice and management. AppealNow's published biography records that he was a Senior Tax Partner at a firm of Chartered Accountants, lectured extensively on international tax and later became Managing Director responsible for US operations for an internationally known restaurant business.
That background matters because it explains the method that later appeared in apparently unrelated areas: read the rules carefully, test the numbers, look for inconsistencies and present the conclusion in language that somebody else can understand.
Taxation and accountancy also forced Barrie to become a communicator. A technically correct explanation is of little use if an audience cannot follow it.
